Professional Vellum Formatting for Memoir & Personal Narrative

Memoir occupies a unique place in publishing: it’s non-fiction, but it reads like a novel. Readers buy it expecting literary craft alongside true story. The formatting needs to match that expectation.

What Memoir Formatting Must Do

Memoir readers are reading a real person’s story. The formatting should:

Stay invisible — ornate or heavily stylized formatting competes with the author’s voice. Memoir needs clean, readable typography that defers to the narrative.

Signal structure clearly — many memoirs use non-linear structures, multiple time periods, or alternating storylines. The formatting needs to make these shifts clear without breaking the reading experience.

Honor the author’s voice — the typography choices (font, spacing, chapter header style) should feel congruent with the author’s voice. An intimate, confessional memoir needs different treatment than a high-stakes survival narrative.

Non-Linear Structure Formatting

Memoirs that move between time periods need consistent visual cues. Standard approach:

• Date/place headers above chapter or scene headers: “New York, 1987” before a flashback section
• Consistent scene break style for all time transitions
• Clear part breaks if the memoir is organized into distinct life phases (“Part I: Before” / “Part II: During” / “Part III: After”)
