Self-Publishing Glossary

What Is an ISBN? — Self-Publishing Glossary

ISBN: An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a 13-digit unique identifier assigned to a book edition. It allows retailers, libraries, and distributors to identify and track a specific book. Each format (ebook, paperback, hardcover) of a book gets its own separate ISBN.

The ISBN question is one of the most common sources of confusion for first-time indie authors. Here’s the plain-English answer: most indie ebook authors don’t strictly need one, but understanding when you do matters.

ISBNs for Ebooks: The Reality

Amazon KDP does not require an ISBN for ebooks. Apple Books accepts ebooks without ISBNs (though recommends them). Kobo requires ISBNs for direct publishing but Draft2Digital provides free ones.

The practical result: many indie authors publish their first several books without purchasing ISBNs and have no problems.

When You Do Need Your Own ISBN

Publishing wide without a distributor: Going direct to Apple Books requires an ISBN. Going direct to Kobo requires an ISBN. Going direct to Barnes & Noble requires an ISBN.

Print books through IngramSpark: IngramSpark requires an ISBN for all print titles. KDP’s free ISBN doesn’t work with Ingram.

Library distribution: Libraries catalog by ISBN. If library distribution matters to you (OverDrive, Hoopla), having your own ISBN is important.

Long-term catalog building: If you’re building a serious indie publishing business, owning your ISBNs means you control the publisher of record on every listing. Free ISBNs from distributors list the distributor as publisher.

ISBN Costs by Country

Country Agency Single ISBN Block of 10
USA Bowker ~$125 ~$295
UK Nielsen ~£89 ~£164
Australia Thorpe-Bowker ~A$44 ~A$88
Canada Library and Archives Canada Free Free
Indonesia Perpusnas Free Free

Indonesia and Canada offer free ISBNs through their national library agencies — a significant advantage for authors in those countries.

One ISBN Per Format

This is the rule most first-time authors miss: every distinct format gets its own ISBN.

  • Your ebook: ISBN 978-xxx-xxx-xxx-0
  • Your paperback: ISBN 978-xxx-xxx-xxx-1
  • Your hardcover: ISBN 978-xxx-xxx-xxx-2
  • Your large print edition: ISBN 978-xxx-xxx-xxx-3

Plan your ISBN purchases accordingly.

Common Mistakes

Assuming you need an ISBN to sell on Amazon — Amazon assigns its own ASIN and does not require an ISBN for ebooks on KDP. ISBNs are required for print books distributed through Ingram, however.

Using a free KDP-assigned ISBN for wide distribution — KDP's free ISBNs are KDP-specific and cannot be used on other platforms. If you want a single ISBN across all retailers, buy your own.

Buying a single ISBN when planning multiple formats — each format (ebook, paperback, hardcover, large print) needs its own ISBN. Plan ahead when purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an ISBN to publish an ebook on Amazon KDP?

No. Amazon KDP does not require an ISBN for ebooks. Amazon assigns its own identifier (ASIN) to every book. ISBNs are optional for KDP ebooks. However, if you're publishing wide (Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, etc.), an ISBN is required or strongly recommended by most retailers.

How do I get an ISBN?

ISBNs are purchased through your country's official ISBN agency. In the US, the agency is Bowker (myidentifiers.com). In the UK, it's Nielsen. In Australia, it's Thorpe-Bowker. Prices vary by country and quantity — single ISBNs are more expensive per unit than buying in blocks of 10 or 100.

Can I use Draft2Digital's free ISBN?

Yes. Draft2Digital (and some other distributors) offer free ISBNs. These are valid for distribution through D2D's channels. The ISBN is assigned to D2D as the publisher of record, not you. If that's acceptable, free D2D ISBNs work fine for most indie authors.

What's the difference between an ISBN and an ASIN?

An ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) is Amazon's internal product identifier — assigned automatically to every product on Amazon, including books. An ISBN is a universal standard used across all retailers and libraries. On Amazon, ebooks have both an ASIN and optionally an ISBN. Outside Amazon, only ISBN matters.
